Solstice Mixed-Use Development

Solstice is a dynamic mixed-use development that BRE is building to satisfy a high demand for residential living in downtown Sunnyvale. The project features 280 residential units consisting of Studio, 1 BR, 2 BR apartments and ground level townhomes. The residential units are complimented with 34,000 sf of Retail spaces, in two 6-story buildings with underground parking. The name Solstice was chosen for the project to signify dichotomy in design, referencing Summer vs Winter, warm vs cool, light vs dark. Inspired by the notion of opposites, the design features two blocks of similar scale with street level continuity of retail expression, yet each block holds unique design features.

One block features cool colors, metal finishes, more of a “large office” pallet, while the other block has warm colors, wood finishes, more of a small retail pallet. This design approach is a response to surrounding development, creating a transition from adjacent high-rise office buildings to low-rise retail buildings. The project offers varied retail experiences. Street corner retail is set back and covered, typical retail spaces benefit from tall storefront glass and deep soffit projections, and a special retail courtyard is carved into streetscape and accented with public art. These retail variations create a vibrant, dynamic streetscape with opportunities for outdoor dining, outdoor exhibits, and music to enhance the pedestrian experience.
