Shanghai OCT Block 4 Mixed-Use Development

Inspired by the work of Ellsworth Kelly, this mixed-use project was planned to create an appearance of randomness within a highly structured order. Within this framework our conceptual approach translates to a variety of open spaces and building heights. Responding to the existing onsite buildings, designers replicated the structural grid found in the adjacent clubhouse and used it as the planning grid for the new project. This strategy allowed the team to maintain consistent scale and mass across the entire block.

In addition to the main residential clubhouse which forms the primary entrance into the development, the project site is bound by 2 water canals, and a large landscape birm. These unique edges are reflected in specific massing profiles. Along the water (project frontage), the massing is the lowest and least dense. Along the birm (the back) the massing is the highest and most dense. The massing on the north side mirrors the clubhouse and creates reciprocal public space at the ground level.
